Supporting Phonics at Home

During Year R phonics lessons, children learn the individual sounds each letter or group of letters make. We also learn how to blend sounds together to read words and or segment words into individual sounds to write them. In each lesson, we practise reading and writing the letters that represent each sound.

When saying a letter sound, it is important to pronounce the sound as you would say them within a word, without adding an 'uh' sound at the end. For example, say 'mmm' not 'muh'; say 'sss' not 'suh'; say 'lll' not 'luh' and so on. This helps children correctly hear all the sounds in words when spelling.
